Youth Development Network’s (YDN) Youth Leadership Camps are planned and
facilitated in partnership with YDN trained youth and expert adult facilitators.
The activities and curriculum are in alignment with Common Core standards, LCFF/LCAP priorities of 1) student engagement, 2) school climate and 3) student achievement, and also develop 21st Century Skills. The camp content can be customizable to include components from a menu of options.
The Leadership Camp content links various components to build learning opportunities,
develop college/career/life ready skills, enhance community safety, and
ensure healthier, more vibrant communities. At their heart, the Leadership Camps
are designed to provide the key supports and opportunities that most likely are not available
in traditional education settings and are unknown and/or inaccessible to the “at promise”
youth targeted for these camps.
Camp content is also designed specifically to support current and future
academic success by engaging young people in school, community change and the
development of 21st century skills (soft skills): problem solving/critical thinking, oral and
written communication, teamwork, diversity, leadership, creativity, flexibility, initiative and
self-direction, responsibility, and productivity and accountability.
Through these experiences participants will:
- Build strong peer-to-peer and youth-adult partnerships that contribute to a safer school/community climate.
- Develop a sense of connection and comfort with their new school campus or program.
- Explore the values and strategize key solutions to issues that are central to their school or community.
Specific school and community goals are to:
- Support the social, emotional, and physical well-being of young people and their families, increase student academic success, and stabilize communities.
- Transform school climate by increasing school attendance and student achievement, reducing suspensions, and expulsions.
- Integrate community and neighborhood leadership by improving the overall health and well being of young people.
- Develop action plans by youth.
